You can fight poverty without spending a dime by asking for donations instead of gifts for your birthday. With just a few hours' effort, you could really change a person's life. It may be one of the best outcomes you can achieve per hour. It's easy. All you have to do is:
- Click on "Create a fundraising page"
- Click next a whole bunch, or personalize your message, whichever you like.
- Post it on Facebook and email your friends. Just say that if they're going to give you a gift for your birthday, you'd like a donation to help fight poverty.
Where does the money go? By default all donations go to the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI for short), but you can also pick another of our proven charities (note that you cannot pick charities besides these). If you do, please specify your choice of charity in your page's text and contact us.
All of the money goes through Charity Science's partner, The Commonwealth Market. The Commonwealth Market (TCWM) is a registered nonprofit created by an effective altruist, designed with the intent of giving Americans tax deductibility for all proven and cost-effective charities. They keep none of your donation and pass it all through to the proven charity of your choice.
Other countries: This page uses US dollars. You can use our equivalent pages denominated in Canadian dollars, British pounds and Australian dollars.
Tax-deductibility and GiftAid: Donations are tax-deductible.
